Descriptions:

A memorial service was held in the town of Kesennuma for those killed in maritime accidents, with those attending pledging to eradicate maritime accidents. Every year at this time, Kesennuma’s fishing industry and other organizations hold a memorial service to remember those killed at sea and to pray for an end to maritime accidents. Tetsuo Saito, Chairman of the Society for the Preservation of the Kesennuma Sea Martyrs’ Memorial Tower: “We are once again determined to protect the safety of the sea.” Each person present lit incense near the altar and joined hands. Family members present said: “I prayed with emotion that at least one person working at sea would not die.” Before the Great East Japan Earthquake, this memorial service was held in a memorial tower by the sea, but it is now located on a hill nearby. It is held in the temple. Last year, two names were added to the memorial tower, bringing the total to 611 people.
