Descriptions:
This week we’re in Chiang Mai, Thailand to celebrate the festivals of Yi Peng and Loy Krathong. These two festivals usually take place in November – they take place on the 2nd full moon of the lunar calendar.
It’s been my absolute dream to see the Yi Peng Lantern festival in person and it was every bit as magical as I thought it would be! I want to say a big thanks to Thai Tourism for their support in making this happen!
If you want to find out more about the festival you can visit the official website; https://yipengchiangmailanternfestival.com/
I also got to explore Chiang Mai’s most iconic and temples, including Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Wat Pha Lat, and Wat Phra That Doi Kham, known for its golden Buddha and panoramic city views. I also visit Mae Kampong Village, a quiet mountain community surrounded by forest, and cafes by the river.

*A few tips I wish I knew before attending Yi Peng Festival:
– Buy tickets as early as possible. Tickets sell out very quickly, especially for popular zones.
– Arrive earlier than you think you need to. Traffic to the venue can be heavy, and arriving early gives you time to enjoy the markets, live music, and performances. I arrived about 3 hours before the lantern release and still wished I had more time to explore.
– My view was from the Elite Zone, but honestly, the views looked beautiful from all areas. However, standard tickets usually include non–air-conditioned transport, which can be uncomfortable due to the heat and bumpy roads.
– Releasing a lantern takes longer than expected. You need to hold the flame for around 2 minutes before release. Many people struggled, so it’s helpful to read the guidelines on the official website beforehand.
– Lantern releasing is a two-person job. You’ll definitely need help!
