On the 27th, a man was presented with a letter of appreciation at the Sendai Minami Police Station. His quick decision saved the life of an elderly person. Musha Hinata (25) lives in Watari City. Around 10:30 PM on the 9th of last month, I was driving to Sendai after work and witnessed a traffic accident. A car came out of a narrow road on the right, crossed the road in front of me, and fell into a swamp next to the road. Musha Hinata said, “It felt like I was driving at about 70 km/h and then just crashed into this.” The driver was a man in his 70s. The accident was caused by improperly pressing the gas and brake pedals. Musha Hinata: “It was dark, so I walked carefully, not knowing whether it was a swamp, an ordinary rice field, or even mud.” but… I ran toward the fallen car. “I knocked quite hard on the door and said, ‘Open it, open it,’ and they unlocked it. It was surrounded by plants, so I opened it from the back (trunk) and said, ‘Are you OK?’ and they didn’t answer. After making sure the man was safe, he asked someone passing by to let him know. Since he had a cane in the car, Musha knew it would be difficult for him to save himself, so he went to help the man. “I knew I had a bad leg, so I pulled it out of my leg and I made her lean on me and I turned around and put her on my back and climbed up and I made her sit here and wait for the ambulance. Musha is actually a former… militiaman. I’ve been doing judo since I was 4 and I was confident in my abilities. “It was only a few months ago, but I was in the Self-Defense Forces and had done judo before, so I was confident in my physical abilities and thought I could help.” Thanks to Mr. Musha for his quick response. The elderly man was not injured. It was an accident that could have been life-threatening if the rescue operations had been delayed. Sendai Minami Police Station Traffic Division Chief Isao Tomita: “Finding him may have been difficult, but I believe Mr. Musha’s timely and accurate judgment led to this rescue.” Hinata Musha: “I feel like he’s trying to be cool.” But it really felt like my body was moving. All I can say is that I’m glad I was rescued.”
