On September 12, Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture held a fishing boat tour where children could learn about the fishing industry, which is the main industry of their hometown. Thirty-nine fifth-graders from Kujo Elementary School in Kesennuma City visited the fishing boat. The children boarded a deep-sea tuna longline fishing vessel and toured the ship’s facilities. Crew member: “The head chef is Indonesian, but he also learned Japanese cuisine and came to the Japanese ship to eat Japanese food.” This fishing boat tour gives children an insight into fishing, which is the main industry of their hometown. This is something that Kesennuma City and other cities do every year to deepen their understanding. The participating children were told about life on board the ship while visiting the freezer where the fish they caught could be frozen and preserved. In addition, on the 12th, southern bluefin tuna nigiri sushi was served and the children enjoyed the taste. Child: “It’s really delicious.” “It was my first time seeing the inside of a boat and I thought it was hard for people to catch tuna.” “I was surprised that tuna had been on this boat for almost a year.” Child: They seemed to deepen their interest in fishing by exploring the inside of a fishing boat that they usually see from the outside.
