At around 5:50 pm on October 4, the Sendai City Council voted on the housing tax ordinance that Sendai City intends to pass, and it was passed by a majority vote. The September regular meeting of the Sendai City Council has reached its final day. The focus was on the occupancy tax the city is considering implementing. First, the accommodation tax is a flat rate of 300 yen per person for stays costing 6,000 yen or more per night as a source of funds for tourism development measures. At the City Council meeting on the 4th, a motion was made asking for further consideration of the proposed ordinance, citing insufficient explanations to businesses. Liberal Democratic Party representative Kokoro Sasaki (opposing position): “It is important to develop measures that will lead to housing provision.” Representative of the Sendai Liberal Democratic Party and Suffrage Association Masaru Tamura (supporting position) “Cooperation with housing providers is important, but at the moment, as a member of the Diet, I cannot make an intuitive decision because there is not enough material to make a decision.” As a result of the vote, the proposal was rejected by a minority.
