Descriptions:
Best friends forever, Katie and Maura have dreamed of being part of the live mermaid show at Weeki Wachee Spring for as long as they can remember. It’s the summer of ’79, they’re fifteen and everything is changing; especially when Katie discovers Maura kissing another girl.
This year is the 20th Anniversary of “Weeki Wachee Girls!” It played in over seventy festivals around the world. It picked up three “best of” awards and was a finalist at Taos in 2000. It aired on San Francisco’s PBS station and NY Metro Channels.
I made this film as an homage to my best friend who reluctantly came out to me in college. The world has changed so much since then and since I made the film in 2000. But I am reminded every Pride month that so much hasn’t changed for the LGBTQ community and I wanted to make this video available for free for every teen who’s ever struggled for acceptance and every teen who’s struggled to understand.
I hope to be able to turn this into a feature length film at some point.
