A special section on sports – “Squash”. We take a closer look at the appeal of squash, which was chosen as a new sport for the Los Angeles Olympics four years later. Squash is played by taking turns hitting a ball against each other on a court surrounded by walls on all sides. Also known as “3-D billiards”, the sport originated in England and combines intelligence, physical strength and technique. Squash was chosen as an additional sport for the Los Angeles Olympics four years later and is currently attracting a lot of attention, and there are places in Sendai where you can try it. This is the Sendai Central Fitness Club in the Aoba district. The court is slightly smaller than half a tennis court. It uses a racket slightly smaller than a tennis racket and a hollow rubber ball about the size of a golf ball. We asked coach Kota Machiya about the rules. Kota Machiya: “Simply put, squash is a sport where two people can enjoy a rally by hitting the wall in front of them, similar to how you hit the wall in tennis.” You hit the ball back to your opponent in the same spot, hitting the floor twice. You must hit the ball back to a designated spot on the wall in front of you before it bounces. When serving, serve to a designated spot on the wall in front of you. During the rally, you can use any wall, but you will eventually have to return to the previous wall. Kota Machiya: “For example, if the ball hits the right wall first, it’s okay if it’s at an angle and hits the right wall, then the front wall. On the other hand, if it hits the right wall, then the left wall, it hits the front wall. It doesn’t go through the wall, so it’s out.” In a narrow court, the key to winning is not only an accurate return technique, but also good positioning. Once the basic rules were understood, the staff, who had no experience of squash, tried their hand! It was a struggle at first, but soon the rally continued. “Squash is played by people of all ages, from children to adults, from beginners to advanced players, and the way it is played is completely different depending on the level. Beginners can enjoy it, and it is a sport that makes them sweat a lot.” Squash still has its charm. It burns about 700 kilocalories per hour, which is about twice as much as playing tennis, and it is said that you can get a good amount of exercise in a short period of time. Kota Machiya: “It burns a lot of calories. It also has an aerobic effect, so you get an explosive amount of exercise in a short period of time. That is the appeal of squash.” In 185, about 20 million people play squash. countries and regions around the world Squash is a popular sport, but there are only about 1,200 players in Japan, not counting enthusiasts. In fact, there are only three squash courts in Miyagi Prefecture. Mr Machiya, who works as a coach, says he hopes the environment will be even better now that the sport has been selected as an Olympic sport. Kota Machiya: “I think there will be more opportunities to attract attention now that it is an Olympic sport, so I hope those who are interested can try it and enjoy it.”
