Descriptions:
The first white-fronted goose of the season was confirmed in the Izunuma area, known for migratory birds. The first group of white-fronted geese arrived at a rice field on the southern side of Izunuma, which lies between the cities of Tome and Kurihara in Miyagi Prefecture. On September 20 at about 1:30 p.m., six white-fronted geese were observed resting their wings. According to the Izunuma and Uchinuma Environmental Conservation Foundation of Miyagi Prefecture, which conducts research on migratory birds, the first arrival of white-fronted geese this season is about the same as usual and a day earlier than last year. The number of white-fronted geese flying around Izunuma peaks in November, with around 100,000 birds congregating for the winter each year. Tetsuro Shimada, director of the Miyagi Izu-numa Prefectural Laboratory and the Uchinuma Environmental Conservation Foundation: “They migrated successfully this year as well. I think their number will continue to grow. I hope they will be able to eat enough, be satisfied and survive the winter.” In addition to white-fronted geese, swans will also begin to appear in the Izunuma area in early October.
