Descriptions:
In the 1880s, San Francisco was flooded with immigrants. Among them, the Chinese were heavily discriminated against because they were seen as cheap and tireless labor. Their social standing was extremely low, and many young Chinese girls were sold into prostitution or slavery.
In Chinatown, rival tongs were constantly at war, leaving the streets in turmoil.
Ah Toy ran the largest brothel in Chinatown, but unlike others, she never forced the women to stay. Every girl there was there by choice. Her place was clean, well-kept, and far safer than what awaited outside. In such turbulent times, Ah Toy did everything she could to protect them.
One day, Nellie, a kindhearted American widow, stepped into Ah Toy’s brothel. Using her late husband’s inheritance, Nellie had been rescuing girls from brothels and offering them housing and work on her farm — a chance to live a decent life.
When Nellie discovered that Ah Toy was also trying to protect the girls in her own way, she began to feel drawn to her. As the two women grew closer, Nellie couldn’t help but kiss Ah Toy one day… and she fell in love with her.
But in an era shaken by violence and divided by race, their love was anything but certain…
