Ismat Chugtai, one of the four pillars of modern Urdu literature. A fierce feminist writer, Chughtai was known for not shying away from writing about the evils of society, and the dreams and aspirations of women at a time when this was unheard of. Her life was one of myriad controversies, be it her story on lesbian love in Lihaaf, or the choices she made in regard to her religion. However, the one fact that no one can deny is that this Padma Shri and National Award winner is an icon even today.
