This was our first time in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and from the moment we arrived, it felt different. No beaches. No ocean breeze. Just mountains, cooler air, and a new rhythm of life. After weeks in Phuket, trading the beach for the mountains felt like a reset. Chiang Mai isn’t Bangkok; it’s a large city without towering high-rises, inviting you to walk, wander, and observe. As we explored temples, local neighborhoods, malls, and markets, preparations quietly began for Yi Peng and Loy Krathong, two of northern Thailand’s most meaningful festivals. Lanterns appeared, rituals took shape, and the city seemed to pause. Is this just a place to visit? Or is it a place you could live… for a month, or maybe more.
