Baoye Road, Guangzhou:
The late-night food culture on Baoye Road in Guangzhou emerged around 2000 and gradually became a landmark for Guangzhou’s nightlife. It’s dominated by Cantonese-style open-air food stalls, specializing in dishes like congee, barbecue, crayfish, stir-fried snails, and clay pot dishes—all bursting with the “wok hei” (the smoky aroma imparted by a hot wok). Tables and chairs often extend onto the sidewalk, with diners drinking and chatting outdoors in a free and boisterous atmosphere. Examples include “Jiu Shao” stall specializing in roasted pigeon, Nanxing Restaurant specializing in congee, and Fusheng Restaurant offering late-night tea. The grassroots internet celebrity “Chao Luo Ming” (Stir-fried Snail Ming), with his mobile vendors and impromptu singing, is a significant feature of the area. However, due to prominent issues such as noise pollution from cooking fumes, obstruction of traffic, fire safety hazards, and hygiene problems, there are numerous complaints from residents.
In March 2023, the operator suddenly notified merchants to vacate within a specified period, catching businesses that had just weathered the pandemic and were hoping for a summer recovery off guard. Many diners rushed to have their “last supper” on Baoye Road before its closure, creating a brief but vibrant resurgence.
The renovation project was incorporated into the Haizhu District’s “Jiangnan Cultural, Commercial and Tourism Integration Zone” and officially commenced construction in July 2023. After approximately one and a half years of construction, the street-style commercial complex “Baoyuefang” officially opened on December 12, 2025. At opening, the occupancy rate exceeded 90%, with numerous established brands and new names opening simultaneously.
Da Pai Dang 大排檔(literally “open-air food stall”):
The term existed in Guangzhou during the Southern Song Dynasty, but it originally referred to a lavish banquet, quite different from its modern meaning. After the economic deregulation of the 1980s, many privately-run food stalls revived, with da Pai Dang being a prominent example. Da Pai Dang emerged as a new catering model in Guangzhou in the 1980s. It is said that the earliest da Pai Dang in Guangzhou was located around Guangwei Road, later expanding to the vicinity of Tianzi Wharf along the Pearl River.
