They said there was no authentic Thai food in Thong Lo…They were very wrong.
My man @PaddyDoyle. has just moved to one of Bangkok’s most talked-about neighbourhoods, and today we’re proving that behind the trendy cafés and cocktail bars, real Thai food is alive and well.
We kick things off in a back-alley beef noodle shop, the kind of place you’d walk straight past if you didn’t know better. From there, we wander along the canal and stumble across some completely impromptu chicken noodles — because in Bangkok, the best meals are often unplanned.
Next up, it’s full southern Thai flavours at a tiny three-table restaurant tucked beneath an old stilted house. We’re talking a seriously punchy southern Thai crab curry and legendary “three stink” stir-fried noodles — made with pickled garlic, stink beans, and cha om. Proper local food, no shortcuts.
We wrap things up the only way you should in Bangkok — jumping on the 8-baht shuttle bus to finish with some of the most famous mango sticky rice in the city at Mae Varee.
So if you think Thong Lo is all western food and fancy brunch spots, this one might just change your mind.
Subscribe for more real Thai food, street eats, and neighbourhood food crawls across Bangkok.

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this YouTube channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!
