Note: In this video I refer to Thailand as the first Asian UN member state to legalise same-sex marriage but I want to be upfront that this framing has a limitation. Taiwan legalised same-sex marriage in 2019, five years before Thailand, and that milestone deserves full recognition. Taiwan’s absence from the UN is a political reality that has nothing to do with the validity of what Taiwan achieved. So I should have used a better categorisation and said that Thailand became the first Southeast Asian country to legalise same-sex marriage.
