We escaped a life in Lagos where our love was a crime. We sought asylum in America, thinking we were finally safe. But you cannot seek asylum from your own memories.
“Asylum of the Mind” is a heartbreaking short film spanning six years, chronicling the journey of Amara and Chika from their vibrant university days at UNILAG in 2018 to their escape to the US in 2024. Against all odds, they fought systemic persecution, public humiliation, and the constant fear of imprisonment under Nigeria’s same-sex laws.
But the ghosts of their past followed them across the ocean. This film explores the devastating, long-term effects of trauma on mental health and a once-unbreakable relationship. Without the “war” of Nigeria to unite them, they turned on each other, spiraling into betrayal, addiction, and ultimate tragedy. We made this film to raise awareness for the mental health crises faced by LGBTQ+ asylum seekers.
