Descriptions:
Our Sunday visit to San Patong began with an unexpected detour. Instead of arriving at Huen Por Sala Daeng Architecture Museum, we accidentally found ourselves at Kaomai Estate 1955. What first appeared to be a mistake quickly became a fascinating discovery as we explored the estate’s historic tobacco drying barns, remnants of a former tobacco-processing operation set within beautiful gardens.
After a coffee stop and some helpful directions, we continued to Huen Por Sala Daeng. Following the sounds of music, we arrived just in time for a traditional Thai martial arts demonstration performed to the rhythm of gongs and cymbals. Afterwards, we explored the museum’s collection of traditional Lanna-style buildings and cultural exhibits.
Feeling hungry, we returned to Kaomai Estate for a relaxing lunch at the bistro, followed by coffee and dessert. Before heading home, we took one last look at the impressive tobacco barns that had started our day.
It was a wonderful outing with our friends Patrick and Boy, who first recommended this unique destination.
Visitor Information
For visitors planning a trip, Huen Por Sala Daeng is located in San Patong District, about 30–40 minutes southwest of Chiang Mai city. The museum grounds are spread out like a traditional Lanna village, with a collection of historic wooden houses, cultural exhibits, open spaces, and shaded walkways. On special event days, performances are typically held on the upper terrace area near the entrance. Comfortable footwear is recommended, especially during the rainy season, as some sections of the access road and grounds can become muddy.
Kaomai Estate 1955 is located only a few minutes away by car, making it easy to combine both attractions into a single day trip. The estate features beautifully restored tobacco drying barns, landscaped gardens, a café, restaurant, and accommodation. We found that visiting both locations on the same day provided a fascinating glimpse into Northern Thailand’s cultural and agricultural heritage.
