# 🚀 Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival | Huai Lan, San Kamphaeng, Chiang Mai
Last Sunday, we returned to the spectacular **Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival** at the Huai Lan Rocket Campsite near San Kamphaeng, Chiang Mai. This traditional Thai festival is normally held on the **first weekend of July**, with activities taking place on both Saturday and Sunday. Sunday is the main event, drawing large crowds from across the region.
We arrived around **12:00 PM** with our friends Winnie, Justin, and Darryl, just as the festival was in full swing. Every few minutes another giant homemade rocket was carried by a team of five or six people to the launch ramp. One brave individual climbed into the protected firing position to ignite the fuse before everyone stood back and waited.
Most rockets soared high into the sky, but not every launch went according to plan! A few experienced a spectacular “rapid disassembly” right on the launch ramp, much to the excitement of the crowd.
The rockets are judged on their height and flight performance, while spectators place friendly bets with bookmakers throughout the festival, adding to the lively atmosphere.
Food stalls and drink vendors are everywhere, making it easy to spend the entire day enjoying the event. We sampled plenty of local food and cold refreshments while soaking up the excitement.
By around **4:00 PM**, the combination of the tropical heat and the constant roar of rocket launches convinced us it was time to head home. Although traffic leaving the festival was heavy, it soon cleared, and we were on our way.
