Descriptions:
Today I attempted to survive a full day in Thong lor one of Bangkok’s richest and most expensive neighbourhoods with only $5 (around 163 baht). Known for luxury condos, supercars, designer cafés and high end nightlife, Thonglor is usually associated with wealth, not budget travel. So I wanted to see if it was actually possible to spend an entire day there without breaking the bank.
I started the morning with a cheap Thai street pastry breakfast before heading to Dib Bangkok, Bangkok’s new contemporary art museum built inside a transformed industrial warehouse near Sukhumvit 40. The museum has quickly become one of the city’s most talked-about cultural spaces thanks to its modern architecture, curated Thai and international art, and minimalist industrial design.
For lunch I stopped at the legendary Jae Som on Sukhumvit Soi 55 opposite the mosque a local hidden gem in Thonglor known for affordable Thai comfort food surrounded by one of Bangkok’s wealthiest districts. This area perfectly shows the contrast of modern luxury towers sitting beside old-school Bangkok street life.
After lunch I explored The Commons, one of Bangkok’s most famous lifestyle community spaces. Located in Thonglor Soi 17, The Commons is known for its open-air architecture, specialty coffee culture, boutique restaurants and creative atmosphere that attracts Bangkok’s young professionals, influencers, expats and digital nomads.
From there I headed to Wat Pasi to slow things down and experience a quieter side of the neighborhood before walking back toward Dasa Book Cafe one of Bangkok’s best-known second-hand English bookstores and a hidden gem for book lovers in Sukhumvit.
To finish the challenge I relaxed in Benchasiri Park before grabbing a final cheap bowl of Thai pork noodles and heading home completely exhausted after trying to survive Bangkok luxury on a budget that even backpackers would struggle on 😆
Please note this is not a serious budget for tourists to Bangkok, more of a fun challenge in order to give you some ideas on how to or where to save.
