Melaka Day 4!
A day after Chinese New Year, we planned to finally go on a Melaka River Cruise. Unfortunately, we woke up close to 10:00am, and by the time we left the Airbnb it was already past 11:00am.
We walked out of Imperio Residence to catch a Panorama Melaka bus to Jonker Street from the flats at Taman Hilir Kota 1. The bus arrived soon enough, and for RM1.50 (≈ USD/EUR0.30) each, it took us to Jalan Kubu.
We got off right in front of the Jonker Walk archway.
Satay at Xiang Ji
We strolled along Jalan Tokong, then turned left onto Jalan Portugis, heading north until we reached Xiang Ji Satay House.
It was the day after Chinese New Year, and they were swamped with takeaway orders. We were lucky to arrive before they stopped accepting new ones. This place is one of Brendan’s favourites, so we’ll definitely bring him here next time.
We ordered 30 sticks of satay, a serving of Nasi Himpit, and Coca Cola for RM45.00 (≈ USD11/EUR10).
River Walk & Street Art
We walked back south along Jalan Portugis, turned left onto Jalan Tokong, then left again onto Jalan Hang Kasturi. We slipped into a small alley where the Melaka Street Art (The Well) murals were located.
At the end of the alley, we emerged onto Jalan Kampung Pantai, then ducked into another alley that led us straight to the riverside. We crossed the Kampung Jawa Bridge and turned left, hoping to visit Sin See Tai, but it was closed.
We continued walking along Jalan Bunga Raya, then over to Jalan Laksamana, heading southwest until we reached Dutch Square — the Melaka Clock Tower, The Stadthuys, Queen Victoria’s Fountain, and Christ Church all glowing in the afternoon sun.
From there, we walked along Jalan Kota to its very end and arrived at the iconic A’ Famosa.
Cooling Down at Dataran Pahlawan
The weather was scorching, so we dashed into Dataran Pahlawan through the north entrance and exited through the south. We then slipped into Starbucks to cool down with drinks for half an hour.
After that, we walked back into the mall and made our way to the east entrance, where we hailed a Grab for RM9.00 (≈ USD/EUR2) back to the Airbnb.
Evening at Alai
A thunderstorm rolled in, and Grab cars were scarce. Eventually, we hopped into Puteh and drove east along Jalan Padang Temu and Jalan Permatang Pasir toward Alai, planning an early dinner at Haji Nasir Ikan Bakar — one of our long time favourites.
Outdoor dining wasn’t allowed due to unpredictable weather, so we couldn’t capture the sunset. Still, we browsed the fresh seafood and settled on:
• Grilled Siakap (Asian Sea Bass)
• Prawns in Sambal Sauce
• Fried Flour Dipped Calamari
• Salted Kailan
With drinks, dinner came to RM65.00 (≈ USD15/EUR14) — always good value, always delicious.
We then drove back to the Airbnb.
Tomorrow…
We are firm in our resolve to catch a river cruise tomorrow morning.
Stay tuned!
