If you saw the thumbnail of this video about Ruka from Steins;Gate supposedly getting HIV and thought it was just a bad joke, I hate to tell you this, but it’s real. The good news is that, for now, this only affects Russia, so it hasn’t become a global issue yet.
In 2025, Steins;Gate got a new official Russian dub, but because of the anti-LGBT propaganda law introduced in 2022, licensors were forced to make major changes to the story.
Most people outside Russia have no idea this even happened, because openly talking about it can get you into serious trouble if you get caught. Thankfully, I’m not from Russia. I speak Russian, though, so I can talk about this story without worrying about legal consequences.
